Low Temperature Storage Containment For Vial And Syringe Systems

At the recent Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) Week in Palm Springs, several sessions highlighted the growing demand for advanced therapy medicinal products — such as cell and gene therapies, biosimilars, and live biotherapeutics. These therapies often require ultra-low-temperature storage, increasing the need for specialized vial and syringe packaging systems capable of maintaining container closure integrity (CCI) at temperatures ranging from -50°C to below -130°C. As components expand and contract at different rates under extreme cold, the risk of system breach and loss of sterility becomes a major concern.

Addressing these challenges, Dr. T. Page McAndrew, Director of Scientific Communications at West, presented “Vial Containment and Syringe Systems for Low Temperature Applications,” emphasizing the need for packaging that ensures CCI, product stability, and therapeutic viability across diverse temperature conditions.
